Stitzel-Weller Distillery
About Stitzel-Weller Distillery
If you are planning over three or four tours when you come to Kentucky, then you will find Stitzel-Weller a nice change of pace from process heavy tours. Learn how A. Ph. Stitzel and W. L. Weller survived Prohibition by selling medicinal whiskey. For fans of the highly sought after bourbon, find out how Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle, Sr. helped the distillery succeed after Prohibition.
When you arrive, check in at the security gate. Once inside the Visitor’s Center and Gift Shop, you can enjoy a cup of coffee or purchase a cocktail. The tour covers only a small area of the distillery, where the guide describes the bourbon making process. Next, you enter one of the old warehouses, and on your way to the guided tasting, you get a view of the repair cooperage.
Many famous brands, including Pappy Van Winkle, Rebel Yell, Old Fitzgerald, and W. L. Weller were once all distilled here. However, it has not been a functioning distillery since 1992 and they use it for its rickhouse space and to honor its historical significance.
