About Maker's Mark Distillery
When I looked to develop a taste for bourbon, I asked someone where I should start. They suggested Maker’s Mark. This was no mistake. When Bill Samuels Sr. and his wife Margie bought the historic Burks’ Distillery in Loretto, Kentucky, their mission was to create a very approachable bourbon. They experimented with a variety of grains until they settled on red winter wheat as a replacement for rye in the mash bill. The resulting bourbon is an excellent starter and has become a staple on in homes and taverns.
When planning my first bourbon adventure, Maker’s Mark topped my list. What I found was a distillery that had something for everyone. The distillery itself is on the National Register of Historic Places; there is some sour mash tasting as you view fermentation and then the distillation process; the grounds are picturesque, and fans of Dale Chihuly will enjoy his blown glass display outside of the tasting room.
Before my tour, they offered me a bourbon flavored coffee. The tour finished with a thorough guided tasting.
