Michter's Fort Nelson Distillery
About Michter's Fort Nelson Distillery
When you arrive at Michter’s Fort Nelson Distillery, you will wonder how this beautiful building stood vacant for almost fifty years. Time and the elements almost had their way with the structure, which at one point leaned twenty-two degrees at the top. In fact, while touring the facility, you may see how they anchored the brick where a seam was forming. Before your tour, watch the video just inside the entrance. This shows you how they brought the building back to life.
There is very little walking during the standard tour. The focus is on a single floor of production. Michter’s does most of their production off-site, but real production happens in this facility on a smaller scale. The tour includes a view of two pot stills and three cypress fermenters. Michter’s also uses a cage mill for grounding their grains and there is a short demonstration using a miniature version of the machine.
Michter’s has one of the most unusual and well-thought out tasting experiences around Kentucky. You sample several scents found in their bourbons before nosing and tasting the product. Michter’s also barrels their bourbon at both full-strength and a proofed down version. They show the effects during the tasting. Our tour ended with the choice of cocktails.
