Tennessee Hills Distillery in the picturesque town of Jonesborough is a great place to sample spirits. Set in a pre-Civil War grocery store turned salt house, this charming distillery offers a unique glimpse into the past. Upon arrival, browse the spirits in the gift shop and sample a variety of whiskeys, moonshines, vodka, and gin. While there is no formal tour, you can see the fermenters and the homemade hybrid pot still crafted by founder Stephen and his brother. Tastings are free and friendly staff is always ready to answer questions. Don't be surprised to see many locals coming in to buy spirits.
After your visit, head to their Brewstillery in Johnson City for lunch or look out for the TN Whiskey Kitchen food truck. Soon they will also have a whiskey cream distillery opening in Bristol. A family operation through and through, Tennessee Hills Distillery provides a top-notch experience and a stunning drive to get there—just be sure to download maps into your GPS as Jonesborough is off the main highways.
